Search. Preview. Choose.

Search retrieves the existing catalog; it does not generate a new image during the request. You control what gets downloaded and what happens when there is no useful match.

  1. 1. Search with constraints

    Describe the subject, then add orientation, size, aspect-ratio, or other supported filters. Start broad before narrowing your request.

  2. 2. Preview the result

    Inspect preview URLs and image metadata. Preview URLs are stable and unsigned, so keep the image ID as the durable identity; search results never grant original access.

  3. 3. Authorize an original

    Request the download endpoint for your chosen image. Store the original for permitted uses under the license terms, not the signed download URL, which is short-lived.

Metered searches charge only after a valid search returns at least one result. Invalid input, service failures, and empty results do not use search credits. Search requests are not idempotent, so do not retry an uncertain request automatically. Existing download ownership does not bypass authentication, image availability, or rate limits.

Make your first call.

  1. Create an account and create a key in the dashboard. Keep the key on your server, never in browser code.
  2. Download and inspect the helper. Run node pix4less-quickstart.mjs to read current pricing without a key or credit charge.
  3. Set PIX4LESS_API_KEY securely. Set PIX4LESS_MAX_CREDITS to an allowance you choose from the live price book, then use the example above. The allowance is a preflight estimate, not an atomic server spending cap.

Review images for your use case. Searchable catalog assets are not all human-reviewed, and the API does not guarantee subjective fit, universal rights clearance, or a match for every query. Generation is a separate paid-standing workflow, not an automatic API fallback.
